Wisconsin Public Education Network and the Wisconsin Alliance for Excellent Schools mourn the passing of Milwaukee Alderman Jonathan Brostoff.

Before becoming a Milwaukee Alder in 2022, Rep. Jonathan Brostoff served in the Wisconsin Assembly from 2015 to 2021 representing the 19th Assembly District. In the Assembly he championed our public schools, disability rights, sign language and interpretation service regulation, and co-authored bills calling on the legislature to reinstate AGR (Achievement Gap Reduction) and SAGE (Student Achievement Guarantee in Education) programming in our public schools, and many more people first bills. He spoke up and out about the inequities exacerbated by the state’s voucher program and fought alongside fellow legislators and advocates for equitable resources for our public schools.

Jonathan was an approachable elected representative, with an open door and open ear. He seemed to always work best with others, in coalition, and had a wide range of thought partners. He made fast friends with those he worked with or even just met, especially those who were also into pick-up basketball or Magic the Gathering. He was sometimes quirky, a little spunky, but always incredibly caring. He left a mark in the public education advocacy community.

In addition to serving at the state and city level, Jonathan was a loving son, brother, husband, father and friend, and a proud parent member of the Milwaukee Public Schools community. He is sorely missed by those who knew him.

For his service and for the kindness he spread in his life, we are thankful.

There is a GoFundMe [https://www.gofundme.com/…/support-for-jonathan…] benefiting his family for those moved to donate.
